New Student Orientation

We encourage all incoming students to take a 10 minute online alcohol self assessment as you enter Wesleyan. All information is anonymous. A marijuana self assessment is also available.  Check out the links to the left for more alcohol and other drug safety tips.


Welcome Class of 2013 and transfer and visiting students – NSO gives you a glimpse of what you will experience during your years at Wesleyan. We hope you take every opportunity to attend as many workshops as possible. You will be kept busy, but still have time to socialize with your peers. The following evening activities exist to provide structured down time.

September 2- 7-8 p.m., 8:15-9:15 p.m.

  • Randy Haveson: Party Time!
    Crowell Concert Hall and CFA Theater; See Orientation Booklet for your group and location assignment.
    Party with a Plan! Find out how to be responsible, moderate, and social as a drinker, if you choose to drink at all.
  • Unspeakable Acts
    Crowell Concert Hall and CFA Theater; See Orientation Booklet for your group and location assignment.
    A powerful peer theater piece that looks at the issues of sexual violence and responsibility on campus.

September 2 – 10:30 p.m. – Midnight

  • Square Dance – Andrus Field (rain or shine)
  • Star Gazing – Get a closer look at the stars from Van Vleck Observatory.

September 3 – 10 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.

  • Night at the Freeman Athletic Center (FAC)
    Join your classmates in relay races, pick up basketball games, karaoke, and more. Explore the wonderful facilities that FAC has to offer.

September 4 – 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

  • First Year Matters Common Moment – Foss Hill
    Ice cream, drumming, dancing and more. Seven different cultures will be represented in this once in a life time performance.

September 4 – 10 p.m. – 1 a.m.

  • Bend it at Beckham – Beckham Hall (Wes ID Required)
    It’s gender bending time! At Wes we are aware that gender can be expressed in a variety of ways, and one way it is expressed is through dress. Change clothes with hall mates and challenge what gender is or should be.
  • Coffee House – Usdan Cafe
    Looking for an alternative to a dance party? Have a cup of coffee, listen to live music and poetry reading, and engage in interesting conversations.

September 5 – 10:30 p.m. – Midnight

  • Humorous Hypnotist – Crowell Concert Hall
    Come and be amazed by what Dan LaRosa, The Humorous Hypnotist, can make your friends do…..be ready for anything!

September 5 – 10:30 p.m. – 1 a.m.

  • Improv Groups – Davenport Courtyard (Rain site – Nicolson Lounge)
    Think you are funny? Spend a few hours watching groups who know they are, and have come out to make you laugh uncontrollably for the night.

September 6 – 10 p.m. – Midnight

  • Open Mic Night – Usdan Courtyard (Rain site – Beckham Hall)
    Enjoy one of the most popular Orientation events. This is your chance to strut your stuff and applaud the talents of your new classmates.

September 7 – 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

  • Outdoor A Cappella Concert – Usdan Courtyard (Rain site – Memorial Chapel)
    Come check out Wesleyan’s talented a cappella groups and learn how you can audition to join one.
